Have listened to this recording hundreds of times, my favorite piano piece. No one has done a better interpretation. Had this recording in my 20's and lost to break in of apartment. Found again when I bought a copy of Listz collected works decades later. Joy!!!! Explore a miracle in music and here it is.

Wow!!!! I didn’t know that the actual Toccata was going to sound THAT great! Whoooo! Now that we’ve heard the original it makes one wonder how many other classical pieces were wandering around in Keith’s noggin that were ripe for ELP pickin’!! We’ll never know.

Victor is the best at performing this Concerto. Strong, bold and with conviction. The shear dynamics and clarity is matched by his fluid and at times aggressively executed vibrato. His portamentos make him stand apart from his peers. I love the timbre of his instrument. It stands out along with his volume. Really jumps out of the mix of the orchestra. I bought the cassette of this Concerto in 1986, being a rock guitarist and Paganini was a name going around. I don't try to play the Caprices or Moto Perpetu, but these 3 movements of D major I love more for the 'song' aspect. Has more feeling with an abundance of flash. Victor just makes me drop to my knees in awe of his sound more than anything.

Tretyakov is very dramatic... again, the best version of this Paganini Concerto. I have heard them all, and NO ONE plays with as much conviction as Victor. His pull offs he adds and his portamento come in smooth as silk! Very aggressive, dynamic and full of feeling. Bigger runs/scales are clear and precise from one end to the other, a point where others fall short in my opinion. It's hard to do, yes. Victor just smokes it!!! Scary vibrato and trills, perfectly executed. The last two notes are what sets him apart from others who seem to lose steam by the end of this movement. Just my subjective opinion, naturally.😉

THEE best performed version of this piece. Viktor is an absolute beast! In modern terms that is. Very aggressive, and full of feeling. Adds a special flare to his playing. Precise. Total command of the instrument. I bought the cassette version in 1986 and was blown away by his dynamics and vibrato that just adds to the precise playing.

it sounds so different when he's playing this, i wonder why? is it the piano that was used back then? the tuning? i can hear notes that i don't normally hear from modern day pianists
